Multi Lotto warned by Swedish regulators over lottery betting
SGA says operator had not been “sufficiently clear” over lotto betting offer
Multi Lotto has been warned by the Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA) for offering betting on lotteries without the permission of the lottery operator.
In February, SGA regulators found that Multi Lotto had offered betting on Swedish lotteries, which currently can only be offered with the consent of the lottery operator Svenska Spel. Svenska Spel retains a monopoly on lottery-based gaming under Swedish law.
The SGA also deemed the company had not been “sufficiently clear” in informing players it did not offer lottery-based gaming, rather it offered betting on the results of lotteries.
Following initial discussions between the SGA and Multi Lotto, the operator confirmed it did not offer lottery betting on Swedish lotteries. Multi Lotto said it had “mistakenly” included information about this on their website and subsequently removed all references following contact by the SGA.
In addition to removing all references to Swedish lotteries from its website, Multi Lotto added an additional link to its homepage entitled “What is lottery betting?” which contained explanatory information about the difference between lottery-based gaming and lottery betting.
Despite these changes, SGA regulators deemed that Swedish players could still be misled by the Multi Lotto website about the difference between lotteries and lottery betting.
On 21 March, the company said it had added footnote clarifications to all its webpages to inform players of the difference and would take all necessary further action as required.
Earlier this month, Lottoland received a £58,000 fine from the SGA for offering lottery betting on Svenska Spel’s Eurolottery jackpot without the monopoly holders permission.
