Gambling Commission on the hunt for new industry engagement manager
New hire to be tasked with further strengthening relationship between the regulator and operators as well as ensuring compliance among licensees
The Gambling Commission is on the hunt for a senior manager dedicated to industry engagement as the regulator aims to strengthen its relationship with UK operators.
The hybrid position will be based out of its Birmingham headquarters, with remuneration set at £52,000.
The closing date for applications is 12 January, with the successful candidate being tasked with leading engagement with operators, with the aim of “driving compliance at the earliest opportunity”.
The job description read: “We’re looking for a proactive, passionate leader who can lead our engagement activity across the compliance function.
“As part of our compliance team, you’ll work with the largest gambling operators, driving compliance at the earliest opportunity, leading our engagement activity across the compliance function and working to ensure consumer’s interests are at the heart of everything we do.”
Other requirements under the senior manager remit include ensuring the industry is complying with legislation, to “maintain positive relationships with critical stakeholders” and to oversee the development of operator relationship strategies.
The job listing noted that “an understanding of the gambling industry” was a desirable skill, whereas essential skills for the position include leadership experience, stakeholder engagement and managing competing priorities.
Posting on LinkedIn, Gambling Commission director of compliance Dan Whitlam said the position could have a “hugely positive impact on the industry”.
He said: “Industry engagement is key to raising standards and driving compliance at the earliest opportunity. I’m delighted to be recruiting a brand new senior management role to lead on this work.“The Commission is a great place to work and there is lots of exciting change and improvement happening across the ops functions so it’s an excellent time to join and help shape the future of how we regulate gambling in the UK.”
The job listing came after Gambling Commission CEO Andrew Rhodes told industry chiefs in November that the regulator was committed to further expanding collaboration.
Speaking at the its annual CEO briefing, he noted: “It’s worth remembering the Commission is not a massive organisation and it wouldn’t be feasible to build regular two-way relationships across over 2,000 licenced operators.
“We are looking to provide opportunities for two-way operational collaboration, and to build trusted relationships both between the Commission and all of you and also, between operators at that more operational level.”
He added: “At the Commission we’ve been speaking about how we want a better, more constructive relationship with all of you for some time.
“The relationship management approach we’ve developed with you this last year is our latest effort to embed that constructive way of working at every level of our work. As I said, we will now take some time to review the outcomes of the pilot but we’re confident we’re on the right track.”
