Optimove iGaming Pulse Report: Christmas promos boost monthly casino revenue
In a monthly column, Optimove shares the latest insights from its iGaming Pulse Report looking at how casino and sports KPIs performed in December

‘Tis the season to be jolly! Both the online sports gaming vertical and the online casino industry enjoyed a bumper festive season as all monetary KPIs increased last month.
As players still spend more time at home – in out and of lockdown – we can also see conversion and retention rates spiking.
Let’s take a deeper look at the exact numbers below.
Sports KPIs
Average deposit amount
The average deposit amount remained the same MoM and increased by 13% YoY, now standing at €34 per player.
Monthly deposits
The average number of monthly deposits for sports bettors slightly increased by 8% both MoM and 7% YoY.
Net gaming revenue per player
There has been an increase of 30% MoM in average revenue per active player during December, and an increase of 20% YoY, now standing at €95 per player.
Retention rates
Retention rates for sports bettors slightly increased by 5% MoM and 6% YoY.
New retention rates
New retention rates have increased by 7% both MoM and YoY now standing at 45%, the highest rate we’ve seen in months.
Looking at the graph below, an increase in new retention rates since July 2020 is in fact evident. This is due to coronavirus which caused sports leagues around the world to shut down until the premier leagues had their finals in July 2020. At the same time, most of Europe’s major leagues, including the Bundesliga and La Liga, also came back in full swing.
Conversion rates
Conversion rates increased by 10% MoM and YoY, now standing at 43%.
Casino KPIs
Average deposit amount
There was no change in the average deposit amount for casino players MoM while the deposit amount has increased by 3% YoY, now standing at €35.
Monthly deposit per player
The average number of monthly deposits per player in December slightly increased by 6% MoM and by 5% YoY, now standing at 10.2 deposits per player.
Monthly revenue
The average net gaming revenue per active player in December increased by 25% MoM and by 22% YoY, probably due to the many gaming operators who ran special promos for Christmas that included holiday bonuses for the new year – which in turn generated higher monthly revenue.
Conversion rates
Conversion rates increased by 11% MoM and by 20% YoY – further proving a really strong month for operators.
Retention rates
Retention rates increased by 5% MoM and by 6% YoY.
Mobile bettors ratio
This KPI is defined as the number of mobile bettors divided by the total number of bettors during the month of December – for this specific report.
Since March, the ratio has been pretty stable here, between 53%-56% – meaning that more than half of casino players use their phones to play. Corresponding with Optimove best practices that suggest that mobile players are more valuable. TIP: it might be wise to send out cross promotions to your desktop players to cross them over to mobile.
