Online casino drives Danish market growth in Q1 2018
Mixed results for market in first three months of the year
Danish online casino revenue jumped 26% year-on-year to DKK520.8m during Q1 2018 (£61.9m), according to the latest market report from Danish regulator Spillemyndigheden.
Growth in sports betting revenues was less stellar at 7% year-on-year and down 22% quarter-on-quarter to DKK555.4m (£66m).
Slots were the dominant casino product at 66.5%, followed by roulette (13.1%) and blackjack (10.8%).
Online poker continued to decline, with tournament and cash game revenue of just DKK27.9m (£3.3m) in Q1 (conversion), down from DKK34.9m (£4.1m) in the same period last year.
The number of people registering for ROFUS, the Danish gambling authorities’ self-exclusion scheme, totalled 14,871 in June 2018, with 10,122 of these choosing to make their registrations permanent. These numbers represent the highest number since the scheme began in January 2017.
In the land based sector, gross gaming revenues generated from gambling machines fell by 1% on figures reported during Q4 2017, dropping to DKK356.9m (£42.4m) in Q1 2018 and down 3.6% year-on-year when compared to Q1 2017.
Denmark’s seven land-based casinos registered modest growth in gross gaming revenue during Q1 2018, rising by 1.9% relative to Q4 2017 and generating DKK92.7m (£92.7m), however this figure was a decrease of 0.8% year-on-year on Q1 2017 figures.
Combined gross gaming revenue for Danske Spil’s three main lottery products Klasselotteriet, Varelotteriet, and Landbrugslotteriet, together with charitable lotteries is largely unchanged since 2016.
