DraftKings nets double win in Massachusetts with September handle and revenue crown
Boston-headquartered operator leads charts as statewide total handle clears half a billion dollars
Massachusetts licensed online and retail sportsbooks racked up sports betting handle of $512.1m in September, according to latest data from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC).
Online operators accounted for the lion’s share of this figure with $499.7m in handle compared to just $12.4m for Massachusetts retail sportsbooks.
Online handle was up 62.6% on a month-on-month (MOM) basis from August, with September marking the first month in which Massachusetts sports bettors could place bets on NFL games.
September also marked the third time in which Massachusetts cleared half a billion dollars in total handle, with the state becoming the 11th to do so in 2023.
Combined, the state’s operators notched up $49.8m in taxable gaming revenue, with the market operating with a joint revenue hold percentage of 9.97%.
As with the handle figure, the state’s eight online operators took the most revenue at just over $49m, compared to just $783,017 in revenue at the three operational retail sportsbooks.
Drilling down into the online numbers, DraftKings once again proved to be the operator to beat in Massachusetts, notching up $290.1m in handle and $27.5m in revenue over September, with the Boston-headquartered operator taking 58% of the state’s overall online handle.
FanDuel, DraftKings’ longtime rival in the US, could only manage $121.9m in handle and $13.9m in revenue over the month.
However, the pair were markedly ahead of BetMGM, which only took $33.5m in handle and $3.6m in revenue during September, and Caesars, which took $18.1m in handle and $1.5m in revenue over the same period.
WynnBet and Barstool rounded out the top six, taking handle of $13.8m and $12.9m, respectively, with Barstool just ahead of Wynn in the revenue rankings generating $942,103 in revenue compared to Wynn’s $833,749 in September.
Fanatics, one of two operators to launch after the market went live in March, racked up $8.8m in handle and $565,005 in revenue in September. The other late arrival, Betr, could only report $303,158 in handle and $28,021 in revenue over the month.
At a retail sports betting market level, Encore Boston Harbor led the way in September notching up $6.2m in handle and $226,727 in revenue.
The Wynn Resorts property beat the Plainridge Park Casino, which racked up $4.6m handle and $270,924 revenue, and the casino at MGM Springfield which took handle of $1.5m and revenue of $285,366 over September.
State authorities took $9.9m in taxes from the state’s sportsbook operators, with retail operators taxed at 15% of revenue, rising to 20% for their online counterparts.
