AGA: 73 million Americans to bet on new NFL season
Latest data from trade body shows 60% increase in betting interest from 2022 season as new season kicks off
More than 73.5 million Americans plan to place a bet on the NFL season, up 60% year on year (YOY), according to latest survey data from the American Gaming Association (AGA).
The figure surpasses the 46 million people who said they would place bets on the 2022 NFL season, according to AGA data released at the time.
Of those surveyed, 19% (49.68 million) said they would place a bet online, or at a casino, or with a bookie this year, a figure up 56% from the same period in 2022.
Drilling down into this metric, 14% of American adults, or 35.1 million in numerical terms, said they would place a bet online, falling to 5% (13.6 million) who said they would place a bet at a physical sportsbook.
Data from the AGA survey suggests 37% of self-confessed NFL fans said they would place a bet this season a figure up 42% YOY.
Business intelligence firm Morning Consult conducted the online survey on behalf of AGA between August 29-31, 2023, among a national sample of 2,200 American adults.
Data was weighted to approximate a target sample of adults based on age, educational attainment, gender, race, and region.
Bettors included those who expect to place a bet online, with a bookie, with a casino sportsbook, in a pool, squares or paid fantasy contest, or casually with family and friends.
Sports betting is currently legal in 34 US states plus the District of Columbia, with four more states set to launch regulated operations within the next 12 months.
