DraftKings makes Maine sports betting market entry with tribal deal
Boston-headquartered operator inks agreement with Passamaquoddy Tribe making $100k donation to support individuals affected by recent shooting
DraftKings has agreed a deal with Maine-based tribal operator the Passamaquoddy Tribe to launch its online sportsbook in the Pine Tree State, pending regulatory approval.
The agreement will see the Boston-headquartered operator’s sportsbook made available to Maine residents for the first time, marking the 25th US state in which it is offered.
“Building a relationship with the Passamaquoddy Tribe is a fantastic opportunity for DraftKings, as we look to bring customers in the state of Maine safe and legal sports betting,” DraftKings CEO Jason Robins said in a statement.
“We look forward to our continued collaboration with the Maine Gambling Control Unit as we become the official mobile sports betting provider of the Passamaquoddy Tribe and launch in our industry-leading 25th state,” the CEO added.
Officials from the Maine Gambling Control Unit (MGCU) recently confirmed the ratification of rules and regulations to govern the state’s sports betting market, with the market set to launch on November 3.
Online market access is controlled by Maine’s federally recognized tribes – the Aroostook Band of Micmacs, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Passamaquoddy Tribe, and Penobscot Nation – with Passamaquoddy the only tribe that hasn’t partnered with Caesars.
“The Passamaquoddy Tribe is excited to enter into a mobile sports wagering agreement with DraftKings,” chief William Nicholas of the Passamaquoddy Tribe said.
“We couldn’t have landed a better organization in the mobile sports wagering arena, and we look forward to continued progress and investment for future growth in the state of Maine,” the chief added.
The agreement marks something of an about face by DraftKings, which had previously said it would not apply for a sports betting license in the state.
In addition to signing an agreement with the Passamaquoddy Tribe, DraftKings has confirmed a $100,000 donation to the Lewiston-Auburn Area Response Fund, which is working to help those affected by the recent shootings in Lewiston, ME on October 25.
“With Maine Community Foundation (MaineCF) as a conduit, 100% of every dollar donated will be allocated to people impacted and the organizations that will help guide Lewiston-Auburn through the process of healing,” DraftKings said in a statement.
“Donations to the Lewiston-Auburn Area Response Funds will be distributed with deep community guidance, including from MaineCF’s statewide board, engagement by MaineCF’s Androscoggin County Committee, and community steering committees,” the firm added.
