Former NCPG chief joins Virginia Council on Problem Gambling board
Keith Whyte moves to state body after spending 26 years with the National Council on Problem Gambling as an executive director, as well as three years with the American Gaming Association
The Virginia Council on Problem Gambling (VCPG) has named Keith Whyte as its newest board member, two months after the industry stalwart departed the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).
Whyte joins the VCPG having spent nearly 30 years with the NCPG, from October 1998 to January 2025, as its executive director.
While there, the organization was tasked with increasing public awareness of problem gambling while also making sure players suffering from gambling-related harm received treatment.
Whyte emerged as a key figure in the problem gambling space in the US and, upon his exit from the NCPG, was praised for his efforts by industry stakeholders and key figures.
Before joining the NCPG, Whyte spent three years with the American Gaming Association as a director of research.
Since leaving the NCPG in January, Whyte has set up his own consulting firm as well being the founder and president of Safer Gambling Strategies – both being created in January this year.
Announcing the hire on LinkedIn, the VCPG said: “Keith has 30 years of national experience in promoting responsible gambling and preventing gambling addiction.
“Keith is a highly effective advocate, public speaker, policy analyst, and program designer with extensive broadcast media experience.
“He is president and CEO of Keith Whyte Consulting, having previously served at the National Council on Problem Gambling and the American Gaming Association.”
Other VCPG board members consist of president Carolyn Hawley, who is an associate professor for the department of rehabilitation counselling at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Fellow department head Amy Armstrong and Laurie Cathers, program director at Virginia Commonwealth University, are also members of the body.
The VCPG’s mission statement is to “increase the wellbeing of Virginians impacted by gambling”, with the body hosting events, workshops, and responsible gambling support as part of its output.
