This year marks our 20th annual snapshot of the key industry power players and how they are performing against their fellow competitors. Looking at the last 12 months, we’ve seen new and expanding markets across the globe, such as the untapped regions of Latam and Africa, and a sustained pipeline of M&A.

It’s been over five years since the US Supreme Court repealed PASPA in 2018 and the battle for supremacy stateside continues. FanDuel, Flutter’s horse in the race, and DraftKings have seemingly created a duopoly, yet the entry this year of ESPN Bet and Fanatics could shake up the status quo. At the other end of the spectrum, some operators have thrown in the towel after achieving miniscule market share in the US. For instance, PointsBet recently sold its US division to Fanatics for $225m, while Kindred Group announced at the end of November it was exiting North America, underlining the land of opportunity is not open to all.

While the US had a larger bearing on this year’s rankings than ever before, the UK is becoming less significant as stagnation and regulation come to the fore. In April, we finally got to see all 268 pages of the white paper into the Gambling Act 2005 review but there has been outcry over some of the proposed measures, namely affordability checks. The Jockey Club CEO Nevin Truesdale launched a petition in November to stop the implementation of the checks. At the time of writing, it has passed the 100,000-signature threshold, which means that the UK government has no other choice than to consider it for debate in parliament.

Last year, there was a pronounced slowdown in M&A activity, with uncertainty around macroeconomic conditions, but we were back with a bang in 2023, making deals and shaking hands once more. During the run up to the EGR Power 50 publication, November alone saw a trio of deals with cryptocurrency-first operator Stake acquiring Betfair Colombia from Flutter Entertainment for an undisclosed sum, Française des Jeux finalising its €350m acquisition of Premier Lotteries Ireland, as well as Rome-headquartered Lottomatica acquiring SKS365.

As with every year, EGR has retained its established formula of judging each company by its international reach (whereby regulated markets are given a higher weight than grey and black markets), strategy and impact, market influence and leadership, and financial prowess. For the latter criteria, the Power 50 relies heavily on the expertise of accountancy heavyweight BDO to assist with calculating the most crucial numbers.

So, to put your curiosity at ease, read on to find out which industry movers and shakers ranked where in the EGR Power 50 2023 and the up-and-coming operators we’ve classed as the Ones to watch over the coming year.

EGR would like to thank EveryMatrix for sponsoring this year’s Power 50, and BDO for helping us compile the rankings by crunching the most crucial numbers. BDO is one of the world’s largest accountancy and business advisory firms and is a leading service provider to the online gaming sector.

“The EGR Power 50 is the most prestigious ranking in our industry. We’re delighted to present the list once again, particularly as it coincides with our 15th anniversary, and we’ve gone live with our largest and most complex tier-one projects during this time. We know what it takes to power a tier-one brand, commercially, technically and structurally, with many of our customers and partners in this year’s list reporting record growth for 2023 and generating game-changing experiences for their players. Our industry is constantly evolving; however, I’m pleased to say the Power 50 remains a mainstay every year and one I’m sure everyone looks forward to dissecting in detail as soon as the numbers are revealed. Many congratulations to all the brands that have made the grade this year! We look forward to seeing you all at ICE 2024 where you can meet our experts to discuss how we can help accelerate your growth, power your brand to new heights and either rise up or join the elite in the Power 50!” Ebbe Groes, group CEO, EveryMatrix

The EGR Power 50 rankings are compiled in partnership with BDO, one of the world’s leading accountancy firms.
